Japan Cherry Blossom Forecast 2012

According to the first forecasts, the cherry blossoms are expected to open according to their average schedule or slightly delayed in 2012. The blossoms are forecast to start opening across wide areas of Kyushu, Shikoku and Honshu in late March and reach full bloom in early April.

Synopsis

Kim Su-Jin, a 27 year old fashion designer, being spurned at the train station by her lover, a colleague who is also a married man. Depressed, she goes to a convenience store where she bumps into a tall handsome man with whom she has a slight misunderstanding. Following that, she returns home and receiving the forgiveness of her father, decides to start life afresh. One day while accompanying her father, who is the head of a construction site, in making his rounds, she coincidentally meets the man whom she earlier bumped into at the convenience store. He is Choi Chul-Soo, the construction site's foreman who is also aiming to become an architect. Chul-Soo may appear like a rough and dirty construction worker initially, but he does exude sheer masculinity in its most basic physical form and is pretty handy when it comes to carpentry or house repairs. Su-Jin instantly takes a liking to Chul-Soo and in what is a refreshing change, actively courts Chul-Soo. There are many sweet events that take place in the event of their courtship which eventually lead to their marriage. From here though, things quickly go downhill. Su-Jin soon finds that she has contracted AlzheimerÂ's disease and the rest of the movie depicts how she slowly and painfully loses bits of her memory until she totally cannot remember anything. Even more painful is seeing Chul-Soo agonise while watching the wife he loves dearly forget even who he is. The ending is bittersweet one but at least offers a glimpse of hope.

The gold-covered granite boulder perched atop a stone pedestal known as Golden Rock, is one of the most breathtaking sights in Burma.
The third most sacred place in Burma, after Schwedagon Pagoda and Mahamuni Pagoda, Golden Rock lies at the top of Mount Kyaiktiyo, in Mon State. It is completely covered with gold leaves layered by Buddhist devotees and is topped by a 5.5 meters-tall pagoda.
Legend has it Buddha, on one of his travels on Earth, gave a strand of his hair to a hermit, who with his dying breath asked his son Tissa to enshrine the lock in a boulder shaped like his head. The child later became King of Burma and fulfilled his father’s wish by placing the divine gift in a boulder on Mount Kyaiktiyo. Burmese Buddhists believe it’s the strand of hair that keeps Golden Rock in place, defying gravity.

5 Long Weekends in 2012

Singaporeans can look forward to five long weekends in 2012, after the Ministry of Manpower announced the dates for the 11 gazetted public holidays for next year.

This includes a four-day weekend, with Chinese New Year falling on January 23 and 24, which are a Monday and a Tuesday.

The other long weekends will be due to New Year's Day (January 1, Sunday), Good Friday (April 6, Friday), Hari Raya Puasa (August 19, Sunday), and Hari Raya Haji (October 26, Friday). For the holidays that fall on a Sunday, the following Monday will be a public holiday.

What is Tom Yum Goong? The famous Thai action movie with Tony Jaa ... :p just joking .. ANYWAY ... Tom Yum Goong is one of Thailand's most famous soups. "Tom Yum" basically means mixed soup; "Goong" means prawn. I've chosen "Goong" because it tuly tastes the best .. BUT if you prefer chicken, fish or mixed sea food that's fine too.

"Tom Yum" has hot and sour flavours and have a touch of herbal ingredients. There are basically two kinds: the first one is called Tom Yum Num Sai, which is basically the soup with all the main ingredients in it; the second one is called Tom Yum Num Khon, which is prepared the same way BUT has two additional ingredients: Coconut Milk and Thai Chili Paste. The second one is the less popular one, so I'll just guide you through the first one.

Ingredients:

**Herbs:

- lemongrass stalks, cut into 1" pieces and smashed a bit (about 1/3 cup)

- 6 lime leaves (1 tablespoon), torn with center vein removed

- 2 tablespoons galangal sliced thin

- 1 tablespoon coriander roots

- 2 tablespoons shallots, whole with skin removed

- 1 cup tomato , sliced into 6-8 pieces lengthwise

- 2 cups broth (pork OR chicken)

- 1/2 cup straw mushrooms, ends removed and halved

- 2 tablespoons thai chilies, smashed

- 4 or 5 medium-sized saltwater prawns, whole and uncleaned

- 1 1/4 teaspoon fish sauce

- 1 1/2 teaspoons roasted chili paste

- 1 tablespoon lime juice (or more to taste)

- 1 tablespoon coriander chopped

Directions:

1. Remove the outer layer of the lemongrass stalks and cut off the end. Cut into 1-2″ pieces and smash with the side of a heavy knife to release flavor.

2. Tear the center vein off the lime leaves.

3. Slice your galangal into thin slices.

4. Cut the tomato into 6 pieces lengthwise.

5. Peel the skin off the shallots and smash lightly.

6. Clean your coriander roots well.

7. Smash the fresh chilies with the back of a heavy knife, or in a mortar and pestle.

8. If using fresh Thai straw mushrooms, slice the bottoms off and cut in 1/2 lengthwise.

9. Clean the shrimp by peeling off the backs and snapping off the top part of the heads, but leave the fat on at the base of the head. Then, peel out the legs + intestine underneath, but leave the tails on.

10. Boil the broth on high until it comes to a rapid boil. Add the lime leaves, lemongrass, coriander root, galangal and tomato. Boil for 4-5 minutes until the broth tastes herbal. if you're using fresh ingredients, 4-5 minutes should be enough. In a separate pan, boil the mushrooms in plain water. Then, add a pinch of salt and the shrimp. Strain the cooked mushrooms and add them to the soup as well. Cook until shrimp turn pink, about a minute. Add the fish sauce and remove from heat. Add lime juice, chili paste, smashed fresh chilies.

11. Taste .. do you like it ? if not ... add what you think is missing and it's ready to serve!

DIRECTIONS

If making the version with milk: roast the dried chilies until fragrant and browned in a dry wok on medium heat (see note).
Clean the shrimp by peeling off the backs and snapping off the top part of the heads, but leave the fat on at the base of the head (the reddish brown goop). This is very important, as that fat imparts a signature flavor into Tom Yum Goong. Don’t discard it. Then, peel out the legs + intestine underneath, but leave the tails on. Set aside.
Boil the broth on high until it comes to a rapid boil. (see note about broth below). Add the lime leaves, lemongrass, coriander root, galangal, shallot(s) and tomato. Boil for 4-5 minutes until the broth tastes herbal. if you’re using fresh ingredients, 4-5 minutes should be enough. In a separate pan, boil the mushrooms in plain water.
After you’ve boiled 4-5 minutes, add a pinch of salt and the shrimp. Strain the cooked mushrooms and add them to the soup as well. Cook until shrimp turn pink, about a minute.
Add the fish sauce and remove from heat. You will now season the soup.
Add lime juice, chili paste, smashed fresh chilies. Taste the soup. Is it sour? Is it salty? If no, add a bit more, 1/4 teaspoon at a time.
If making the version with milk: Add the milk and dried chilies. If doing this step you’ll need to add a bit more lime juice and fish sauce as the milk tames it down a bit. Add about a teaspoon more of each.
Add cilantro and serve. This soup is best served really hot!

Note:

This recipe is for the two most common Tom Yum Goong recipes. Both have chili paste (nam prik pao). The only difference is the addition of milk. Milk gives it a somewhat rounded flavor. It's not enough milk to make the soup creamy, just enough to make it less harsh. If you do add the milk, add the dried roasted chilies and a bit more fish sauce and lime juice as well.

You can use freshwater prawns for this soup if you'd prefer.

This recipe makes a small soup, enough for 2 to eat with a meal. If cooking for a larger group you may want to double or triple this recipe.

Thais do not fish out the parts of this soup you don't eat before serving - they know to avoid munching on the lemongrass stalks, galangal, cilantro root and lime leaves. If serving this to guests who are unfamiliar with Thai food, you may want to let them know what to eat and what not to eat, or fish out the herbs before serving.

Pork or Chicken broth can be made by simply boiling pieces of pork or chicken in water. Leaving the meat on the bone is best. If you do cheat and use a flavor cube or pre-made broth, make sure it's simply meat broth and not flavored with vegetables as well.

Located in the heart of Chinatown, the Chinatown Complex is one of the rare places in Singapore where there exists a bit of old school charm amidst the modern facade. Lian He Ben Ji, like many of the stores at the complex, have literally grown up on site, and despite several renewals of the place, have kept true to their culinary art while evolving to keep up with modern times. Cooked over charcoal burners, each claypot requires a minimum forty minute cooking duration, which translates to at least a forty-five minute wait before one can dig in. It may seem long for some, but I have to say that the wait is definitely worth it. There is something about the charcoal cooking process that brings out the amazing fragrance of the rice. Coupled with three different kinds of chinese sausage, fabulously tender and juicy chicken bits and whole chunks of salted fish, Lian He Ben Ji’s claypot rice really is exceptionally good.

Don’t forget to scrap the bottom of the claypot for some yummy burnt rice bits!

The secret to silky-smooth, creamy porridge is to gently simmer it for at least three hours till the rice grains are almost completely dissolved. The porridge has to be constantly stirred so that it won’t burn. There’s absolutely no shortcut!

This legendary stall has a never-ending queue once its shutters are up. If you don’t see one, don’t rejoice, for it simply means they have sold out!

Neither too thick nor too watery, Zhen Zhen’s beautifully creamy porridge had the perfect consistency. Each bowl was liberally topped with crispy fried shallot, salty preserved cabbage, fresh spring onion and fragrant sesame oil. These toppings added a kaleidoscope of flavours and textures to the already flavoursome porridge.

They were also very generous with the main ingredients. We sampled both fish and chicken porridge. Both boasted fresh, chunky pieces of meat. If we had to nitpick, it’d be that the porridge was a bit too oily. But if rich is how you like it, then Zhen Zhen’s porridge really hits the spot!

We don’t know how much longer this stall will be around for. As it is, the owner is already in semi-retirement mode, opening his stall for just two days a week.

His style is quintessentially classic Cantonese. The grains were nearly dissolved, resulting in a snowy-white, velvety-smooth porridge. On its own, some folks might find it too bland, but we relished the pure sweetness of the rice starch.

Tasty pork slices and minced meat balls contrasted nicely against the plain porridge, while the fish porridge had sufficiently fresh fish slices. The flavours of the porridge base and the ingredients were distinct, but they all came together splendidly.

If you like your congee thick and tasty, then you’ll probably like Joe’s.

The porridge here isn’t pure Canto-style. Even though the rice grains aren’t as broken, the porridge was soft and smooth. We suspect the porridge was simmered in rich broth, which explains its wonderfully robust flavours.

There’s a wide variety of ingredients available to mix and match. We tried the classic pairing of century egg and pork. Taste was fine, but the ingredients could have been chunkier. We preferred the fish options as they were superbly fresh and sweet.

Another Cantonese porridge stall with a long history, Ah Chiang’s main draw is its traditional charcoal flame-cooked porridge. The décor is now more upmarket, and the menu greatly expanded, but the porridge is still old-school.

The porridge here was smooth and tasty enough without having to add soy sauce. Slightly runnier than Zhen Zhen’s or Jiu Ji’s, it was still satisfying, albeit in a lighter way.

We tried two kinds of porridge – sliced fish and pork (sliced and minced pork). Though generous in amount, the fish slices had lots of fine bones. While it didn’t pose any danger, it was quite annoying. The minced pork was nicely bouncy, but the sliced pork was tough and stringy.

The powerful earthquake that unleashed a devastating tsunami Friday appears to have moved the main island of Japan by 8 feet (2.4 meters) and shifted the Earth on its axis.

"At this point, we know that one GPS station moved (8 feet), and we have seen a map from GSI (Geospatial Information Authority) in Japan showing the pattern of shift over a large area is consistent with about that much shift of the land mass," said Kenneth Hudnut, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

Reports from the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in Italy estimated the 8.9-magnitude quake shifted the planet on its axis by nearly 4 inches (10 centimeters).

The temblor, which struck Friday afternoon near the east coast of Japan, killed hundreds of people, caused the formation of 30-foot walls of water that swept across rice fields, engulfed entire towns, dragged houses onto highways, and tossed cars and boats like toys. Some waves reached six miles (10 kilometers) inland in Miyagi Prefecture on Japan's east coast.

The quake was the most powerful to hit the island nation in recorded history and the tsunami it unleashed traveled across the Pacific Ocean, triggering tsunami warnings and alerts for 50 countries and territories as far away as the western coasts of Canada, the U.S. and Chile. The quake triggered more than 160 aftershocks in the first 24 hours -- 141 measuring 5.0-magnitude or more.

The quake occurred as the Earth's crust ruptured along an area about 250 miles (400 kilometers) long by 100 miles (160 kilometers) wide, as tectonic plates slipped more than 18 meters, said Shengzao Chen, a USGS geophysicist.

Japan is located along the Pacific "ring of fire," an area of high seismic and volcanic activity stretching from New Zealand in the South Pacific up through Japan, across to Alaska and down the west coasts of North and South America. The quake was "hundreds of times larger" than the 2010 quake that ravaged Haiti, said Jim Gaherty of the LaMont-Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University.

The Japanese quake was of similar strength to the 2004 earthquake in Indonesia that triggered a tsunami that killed over 200,000 people in more than a dozen countries around the Indian Ocean. "The tsunami that it sent out was roughly comparable in terms of size," Gaherty said. "[The 2004 tsunami] happened to hit some regions that were not very prepared for tsunamis ... we didn't really have a very sophisticated tsunami warning system in the Indian Ocean basin at the time so the damage was significantly worse."

The Japanese quake comes just weeks after a 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck Christchurch on February 22, toppling historic buildings and killing more than 150 people. The timeframe of the two quakes have raised questions whether the two incidents are related, but experts say the distance between the two incidents makes that unlikely.

"I would think the connection is very slim," said Prof. Stephan Grilli, ocean engineering professor at the University of Rhode Island.

WE SAY: We almost thought we got a trail shoe when we saw the Precision 11. Besides the cool looks, it's superbly breathable, lightweight (289g) and perfect for doing speed intervals or for clocking a personal best time attempt. It's hard not to like shoes from Mizuno; they've got a good amount of cushioning, boast an ultra-quiet run (sign of a good heel-to-toe transition) and are reasonably priced. It's a good all-round shoe and probably the best we've come across so far.

The Japan Rail Pass is an unlimited travel pass on the entire JR Lines for the designated period of 7 days, 14 days and 21 days, and it enables those who come to Japan on a short stay status to travel in Japan rather reasonably, compared with full fares they would pay otherwise. You can make as many bookings as you like free of charge, though I wouldn't recommend you to be a no-show.

They are valid consecutively. There is no flexible type of the pass unlike the Eurail Pass and so on, besides regional ones such as the JR East Pass, the Kansai Thru Pass ( valid on private or municipal railway and bus lines ).

The drawbacks of the pass are that you can't take the Nozomi train on the Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen, and that you are imposed of limited express and sleeper surcharges of approx. 10,000 yen when you use the sleeper berth on an overnight sleeper train.

There are three kinds of trains on the Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen Line, Nozomi, Hikari and Kodama. The Nozomi train is most frequent and fastest of the three. The fact that you aren't allowed to take the Nozomi when you are headed to Hiroshima or Hakata from Tokyo is a vital disadvantage. While the Nozomi runs 3 times an hour between Tokyo and Hiroshima directly, the Hikari doesn't run directly on that segment. You need to change at Shin-Osaka or Himeji. Also on the Sanyo Shinkansen segment between Shin-Osaka and Hakata, only one Hikari per hour runs in the daytime, and furthermore, it consists only of 8 carriages, while all the Nozomi trains on the Tokyo-Hakata segment, and all the Hikari trains between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka or Okayama consist of 16 carriages, though there are some exceptions.

However there is a very good point on the Hikari running between Shin-Osaka and Hakata, or what is called 'Hikari Railstar'. The seat configuration in the reserved ordinary carriages is 2-2, while on the other Nozomi and Hikari trains it's 2-3. The reserved seats on the Hikari Railstar serve as semi green class.

Before purchasing the pass, you might want to calculate how much money you are likely to save through it, utilizing the train fare and schedule search sites.

It's on a fine line whether to purchase a 7-day pass or not for those who will fly into and out of Narita, get around Tokyo for a few days and make a return trip to Kyoto because the price difference between the total cost of individual tickets and the JR Pass priceis not that great, and what is more, one can't take the Nozomi between Tokyo and Kyoto on the pass. It takes 2 hours 18 minutes from Tokyo to Kyoto on Nozomi, and it runs at least 4 times an hour, while it takes 2 hours 41 minutes on Hikari, and it runs only twice an hour. BTW, as to Kodama it takes 3 hours 41 minutes and runs every one hour.

There are 5 Nozomi trains between 7 and 8 am, while only two Hikari leave for Kyoto and beyond. Seems JR Central is trying to lead customers to take the Nozomi at any costs.

Breakdown of individual tickets:
Narita Airport -> the Center of Tokyo: 3,500 yen on the 'Suica and NEX' combo.

Transport in Tokyo: 700 yen/day x 3 - the suica credit and deposit 2,000 yen = 100 yen
Tokyo to Kyoto return on the Nozomi reserved seat: 13,520 yen x 2 = 27,040 yen
Nippori to Narita Airport on the Skyliner: 1,920 yen

Total: 32,560 yen, as opposed to 28,300 yen 7-day JR pass
(Total cost can be reduced to 30,720 yen if you can purchase two single discount tickets valid for Nozomi for 12,600 yen each way from a ticket shop who resells proper multiple discount Shinkansen tickets to individual consumers.

For those who prefer flexibilities on an itinerary, the price difference of 4,260 yen might be negligible. If you choose to take the non-reserved carriage from Tokyo to Kyoto, the difference will decrease to 3,450 yen. Nearly all the Nozomi originates at Tokyo, you can surely get a seat. There is no train originating at Kyoto, so you might book a seat when you return to Tokyo.

Furthermore, if you don't mind taking the Keisei limited express, the difference decreases to 2,530 yen. Please don't get me wrong, as I'm limiting this theory in the case where one makes round trips between NRT and Central Tokyo, and between Tokyo and Kyoto.

In case you travel farther than Kyoto from Tokyo, or if you travel to Nikko as a day trip or two on top of the return trip to Kyoto, you can optimize the pass.

I'm not 100% sure whether this can be said about the reverse case, a return trip from Kyoto to Tokyo with the flights into and out of Osaka Kansai. There are various useful JR Lines such as the Yamanote Line, Chuo Line etc which connect travellers touristed spot to spot inside Tokyo. Kamakura and Nikko are also covered from Tokyo by JR.

BTW, there is a discount ticket from Osaka Kansai Airport (KIX) to Shin-Osaka, Kyoto and v.v. That's the 'JR West Kansai Pass'. The one day pass costs 2,000 yen, and it enables you to take a non-reserved seat in the limited express Haruka between Kansai Airport and Kyoto.

The Japan Rail Pass is valid basically on a calendar basis. There is no 7 pm rule as seen on the Eurail Pass that you can take overnight trains leaving after 19:00 with only the following day's validity.

Yet there is a special last day rule on the JR Pass.
Read article #5 in the first fine print.

If you travel overnight on the last day your pass is valid, the basic fare will be covered as far as you travel, including train changes, until you first exit a station. However, surcharges are only covered for the train on which you were riding past midnight on the final day your pass was valid.

This can be interpreted as follows.

e.g. If you have a 7-day pass, and take the 'Nobinobi seat', a carpeted semi private compartment in the limited express 'Sunrise Seto-Izumo' from Himeji at 23:35hrs on the last day of the pass to Tokyo, you don't need to pay anything for the following day's portion on that particular train ride. The train arrives at Tokyo at 7:08 next morning.

Furthermore, you can take connecting trains to, say, Sapporo on the 8th day of the pass as long as you don't clear the turnstile en route. In that case, you will be imposed of the limited express surcharges between Tokyo and Sapporo. Only the base fare is valid on that segment, even though the 7 day JR pass superficially looks void on day 8. The Shinkansen - (limited) express surcharge connection discount scheme works in this case as well.

The case above in the second paragraph ( Tokyo to Sapporo trip on date 8 ) is idiosyncratic, therefore those who try to carry out a similar itinerary should carry the fine print of the JR pass in Japanese with you so that the ticket counter clerk and the conductors might not mistreat you by producing it to them.

I contacted JR East, and the rep thoroughly scrutinized this matter ( it took half an hour ).

Well known as a hot spring resort for many centuries, Kusatsu's fame was further boasted by German doctor Erwin von Baelz, who served at the imperial court in the late 1800s and recommended Kusatsu for its water's health benefits.
Kusatsu is situated at an altitude of 1200 meters above sea level in the mountains of Gunma Prefecture, and offers skiing in winter and hiking during the rest of the year to be enjoyed in combination with hot spring bathing.
